Gothic Gifts and Alternative Art in Weston-super-Mare
If the high street leaves you cold, you are in the right place. The Curious Hideaway was set up for people who like things a little darker, stranger and funnier than the usual gift aisle, and the shelves are stocked by makers who feel the same way.
This is gothic with a sense of humour: doll heads turned into plant pots, folklore monsters printed for your wall, and bags covered in horror icons. Here are the makers to look for.
Sara Redding set up Dead Dolls Society three years ago to save unwanted dolls from landfill, and hundreds have since been rescued and turned into something gloriously odd. Alongside the dolls you will find jewellery, preserved dandelion seed pieces and framed metal detecting finds. Sara is no stranger to Weston either, having run her own shop on Orchard Street around 20 years ago. Mac’s fascination with cryptids such as the Mothman grew into a range of prints exploring obscure folklore and the darker side of UK storytelling. Look out for the gothic chainmaille jewellery too, made with techniques that come from medieval armour. Laura makes bold, dark homeware in resin: handled trays, charcuterie boards, pots, bowls and resin roses, many with a smoky gothic look. She also takes custom requests, so you can have a piece made in your own colours or theme. Velvets, tapestries, brocades and tough canvas become cushions, tote bags, art cases, laptop bags and even dog blankets. Handmade with Rage is best known for gothic, horror and tattoo-inspired prints, with softer designs too if you are buying for someone less macabre. Bridgwater-based Vicki and her husband print bold, cheeky mugs that say what people are often thinking. Many designs are adult-leaning, so have a read before you buy for your nan. They are all dishwasher proof, which the makers tested by leaving mugs in their own dishwasher for six months.Dead Dolls Society

Common questions
Do you sell gothic homeware as well as gifts?
Yes. Resin trays and boards, skull and snake candles, framed curiosities and horror-print cushions are all part of the mix, and it changes as makers bring in new work.
Can I order something custom?
Several of our makers take custom orders, including Resin by Laura. Their stockist pages show how to get in touch, or send us a message and we will point you the right way.
