The Curious Hideaway is not one shop so much as a whole crowd of tiny ones. Every shelf on West Street belongs to an independent maker or small business, which is why one corner holds framed butterflies and bone displays while the next is full of crochet hair bows.

There is no head office choosing the stock and no two visits look quite the same. New work arrives whenever it is finished, and one-off pieces leave for good when they sell. Here is a guide to what you can expect to find, and who makes it.

When you buy something here, the money goes to the person who made or chose it. Many of our stockists started out at market stalls, and several will take custom orders, so if you like someone’s work but want it in a different colour or for a particular person, it is always worth asking.
